Eileen Gleeson named as interim manager for Ireland Women's National team

Former assistant to Vera Pauw takes over the role.

THE FAI HAVE confirmed that Eileen Gleeson will take on the role of Interim Head Coach of the Ireland Women’s National Team following the departure of Vera Pauw.

Currently FAI Head of Women and Girls’ Football, Gleeson’s watch will begin with Ireland’s opening two Uefa Nations League games in September.

The Dubliner was previously involved with the WNT under Pauw as Assistant Coach and will now lead the team on an interim basis as the recruitment process for the new Head Coach begins.

The 42 understands that Gleeson is not a contender for the full-time job.

Ireland will host Northern Ireland at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, 23 September, in the first women’s international staged at the venue. They then travel to Budapest to take on Hungary in their second League B game on Tuesday, 26 September.

Gleeson departed as Pauw’s assistant in 2021 to take charge of Glasgow City, with Tom Elmes taking over the role. She has held her Uefa Pro Licence since 2015 and worked in several other high-profile roles in Ireland, including managing UCD Waves and Peamount United in the Women’s National League.

The FAI announced that they would not be renewing Pauw’s contract after a lengthy board meeting last night. It brings an end to the Dutchwoman’s history-making four-year tenure.
