Edgar dominated featherweight rival Cub Swanson at UFC Fight Night Austin and staked his claim for the next shot at champion Jose Aldo.
The former lightweight champion locked in a rear naked choke in the final seconds and forced Swanson to tap at 4:56 — the latest finish in UFC history.
After improving to 17-4-1 with his third straight win, Edgar sent a message to UFC President Dana White.
Dana, you said you’d be watching – I hope you like what you see. I’m coming for that belt.
“If you don’t give it to me right away, I’m coming for it.
“And for all those people who are doubting me, you better buckle up. This is just the beginning. I’m just getting started.”
Edgar was ranked third in the division before Saturday night’s win, two places ahead of another man who has designs on the next shot at Aldo — Irish sensation Conor McGregor.
McGregor returns to the Octagon against Denis Siver on 18 January and believes that a win there would secure a title fight.
Edgar says the matchmakers don’t need to wait to see The Notorious’s next outing before deciding.
“It should be me. Based on my performance, based on what I’ve done in my career, it should be me. That’s it.”
