DUSTIN JOHNSON SAVED the best till last and came from behind to win the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai overnight.

Six shots clear at one point on Saturday, Johnson needed a brilliant surge to hold off Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell over the final holes.

The highlight came at the 16th when he chipped in for eagle and went on to card a tournament record of 24-under-par, three shots clear of Poulter in second.

McDowell finished a further shot back on 20-under despite his best efforts and a closing round of six-under 66.

There was good news too for world number six Rory McIlroy who started the week 62nd in the money list and just outside the 60-man cut-off point for the DP World Tour Championship, the final event in the Race to Dubai.

But he made the cut with plenty to spare, finishing alongside Graeme de Laet in a tie for sixth on 15-under.
