Towell opened the scoring with a fine 26th minute half-volley from a Kurtis Byrne touch. The striker soon had his brace, smashing in another volley after Dane Massey had kept an over hit cross alive.
With just under 35 minutes remaining, Byrne claimed his second assist of the night as Towell claimed the match-ball with a calm finish pas the advancing Ger Doherty.
The victory also proved enough to leave the Lilywhites in second place at the finish as the Bit O’ Red failed to break the deadlock at home to Cork City.
Elsewhere, Shamrock Rovers claimed a 3-0 win over Bray thanks to Mark Quigley’s 26th minute strike and Karl Sheppard who provided two after the break.
In Tolka Park, Drogheda recovered from two goals down to claim a point against Shelbourne.
Derek Doyle and Paul Andrews had put Shels in pole position with a goal apiece inside 25 minutes. The Drogs though, would have Gavin Brennan to thank for the point as he turned in a 31st minutes penalty and 31 regulation minutes later, levelled.
Tonight’s other game boasted just the one goal, but Robbie Williams’ 80th minute strike ensured all three points for Limerick at home to Bohemians.
