Division 1B HL: Wins for Dublin, Limerick and Offaly

Key victories for some of the promotion-chasing sides in the second tier of the hurling league this afternoon.

Dublin 3-12
Antrim 1-10

DUBLIN ENJOYED A comfortable eight-point victory over Antrim at Casement Park in this afternoon’s Allianz NHL Division 1B clash.

Paul Ryan’s early goal set the visitors on their way as Anthony Daly’s Dublin collected a second victory from two outings.

Dublin were 1-2 to 0-0 in front before Antrim landed their first score of the game in the eighth minute.

Dublin, playing with a big breeze in the first half at Casement Park, scored a second goal in the 30th minute when Michael Carton’s speculative long-range effort deceived everybody and ended up in the Antrim net.

At half-time, the Sky Blues led by 2-7 to 0-4 and they were comfortable throughout the second half.

Dublin continued to apply huge pressure and a third goal arrived in the 49th minute, scored by David ‘Dotsy’ O’Callaghan.

That score handed Dublin a 3-8 to 0-9 lead and there was no way back for the Glensmen.

Stephen Beatty grabbed a late goal for Antrim but it proved mere consolation as Daly’s promotion hopefuls maintained their 100 per cent start to the 2013 League campaign.

Limerick 3-10
Carlow 1-13

LIMERICK scored a narrow three-point victory over dogged Carlow in Division 1B of the Allianz National Hurling League this afternoon.

The Barrowsiders could have pulled off a shock win at the Gaelic Grounds but paid the price for a host of missed chances.

Limerick suffered an early injury blow when captain and centre back Donal O’Grady went off with a serious collarbone injury that leaves him facing a possible race against time to be fit for the Munster semi-final against Tipperary in June.

At half-time, Limerick led by 3-2 to 0-8 and it was Declan Hannon, outstanding for Mary Immaculate College in the recent Fitzgibbon Cup campaign, who scored the opening goal for the Shannonsiders in the 12th minute, from a 20m free.

Hannon struck again in the 25th minute before Seanie Tobin netted a third goal for John Allen’s Limerick, who led by three points at the break.

Limerick kept Carlow at arm’s length during the second half but the game exploded into life towards the finish as Craig Doyle grabbed a goal and followed up with a point, to leave just three between the sides.

Carlow had a chance to snatch a draw late on but Doyle, who had shown the Limerick defence a clean pair of heels, was swallowed up by home defenders as he tried to scoop the sliotar into his hand.

Scorers for Limerick: Declan Hannon 2-6 (1-4f), Seanie Tobin 1-0, Seamus Hickey, Graeme Mulcahy, Paudie O’Brien, Adrian Breen 0-1 each.

Offaly 0-16
Wexford 0-14

OFFALY overturned a four-point half-time deficit to see off Leinster rivals Wexford at O’Connor Park in Tullamore this afternoon.

At half-time, the Paul Morris-inspired Wexford side were 0-10 to 0-6 clear but hosts Offaly made the wind advantage count in the second half. With ten minutes remaining, the sides were level and Offaly pushed on to collect the points on offer.

Offaly shotstopper James Dempsey played a crucial role in the final minute as he kept out his opposite number Mark Fanning’s 20m free.

Wexford were left to rue eight first half wides as Ollie Baker’s Offaly held out for a crucial win that could kickstart a promotion push.

Shane Dooley was Offaly’s leading scorer with a haul of seven points as Morris hit 0-10 for beaten Wexford.

25 minutes elapsed, however, before Offaly managed a score from play, with Dooley’s proficiency from placed balls keeping the Faithful county in the hunt.

Four points behind at half-time was an acceptable result for Offaly given the conditions and when James Mulrooney, Colin Egan and Dooley opened with quickfire second half points, the home side had half an hour to restore parity.

But Wexford didn’t make life easy for Baker’s men as Morris kept the scoreboard ticking over as Richie Kehoe held firm in defence. Wexford were 0-13 to 0-10 clear but Offaly dominated the last 15 minutes and sub Odhran Kealey put them in front late on.

Points from Thomas Carroll and Derek Morkan pushed Offaly three clear before Morris responded with a Wexford score.

In scenes reminiscent of last year’s dramatic League clash between the sides, Wexford had a late chance to snatch it but Dempsey held firm in the Offaly goal to deny Model County shotstopper Fanning.

Scorers for Offaly: Shane Dooley 0-7 (0-7f), Joe Bergin 0-2, Derek Morkan, Colin Egan, Cathal Parlon, Derek Molloy, James Mulrooney, Odhran Kealey, Tomas Carroll 0-1 each.
Scorers for Wexford: Paul Morris 0-10 (0-7f), Rory Jacob 0-2, Richie Kehoe (0-1f), Ciaran O’Shaughnessy 0-1 each.
