'UK interest' in Drogheda United manager's job

Drogs board want to have Mick Cooke’s successor in place within the next 10 days.

BEATEN FAI CUP finalists Drogheda United expect to appoint a new manager within the next 10 days.

Mick Cooke’s three-year term ended after the dramatic Aviva Stadium defeat against Sligo Rovers, Drogheda’s third cup final loss of the season.

Cooke insisted yesterday that there was no chance of repairing his damaged relationship with the board, who are now “moving swiftly” to appoint his successor.

A short statement read: “A number of very interesting applications have been received, including several from the UK, and the board will be meeting with a selection of these as well as approaching others who have been identified as potential candidates over the coming days.

“It is the Board’s intention that a decision will be reached within the next 10 days in order that plans can be put in place for the 2014 season as quickly as possible.”

Meanwhile Cork City could be in a position to announce their new manager, widely expected to be John Caulfield, within the next few days.

Over 50 candidates applied with former Premier League manager Glenn Roeder among those rumoured to be interested.

The interview process is now complete and City chairman Mick Ring said they will confirm the new man’s appointment “very shortly.”
