'Doyler has been unlucky, but he's looking sharp again' - Stephen Ward

One of Wolves’ Irish contingent says his club-mate will be an asset to Ireland this summer.

KEVIN DOYLE IS rediscovering his form just in time for Euro 2012, according to team-mate Stephen Ward.

The 29-year-old striker has looked off-the-pace at times this season and a tally of just four goals from 31 Premier League appearances has seen the once sure-starter spend time on the substitutes’ bench in recent months.

His central role in the international team could also be under threat with Giovanni Trapattoni likely to choose one of Doyle, Shane Long, Jon Walters and Simon Cox to partner captain Robbie Keane for the opening Group C fixture with Croatia on June 10.

Doyle did look lively during the dramatic 4-4 against Swansea, which Wolves came back from a three-goal deficit to rescue a point, and registered two assists. When asked for his opinion on Doyle’s current misfortunes at the launch of the EFlow FAI Summer Soccer Schools today, Ward said:

I see Doyler on a daily basis, I sit beside him in the changing room and he has been the same every year. He’s had a few niggles and been unlucky with injury but he’s been as sharp as ever in training and I’ve said before he’s a good pro and looks after himself.

“It’s been tough as he was in the team doing well then he got an injury and has probably not hit the form he has done in previous years.

“He’s still a top quality player and in the last couple of weeks has come back into the team and looked really sharp, which is a real plus for the Irish squad.”

Wolves are already resigned to relegation but will look to show some pride and add to their five Premier League wins in the remaining two games – at home to Everton on Sunday and away to Wigan the following week.
