Silver medal for Downey and English caps one of Irish cycling's best-ever weekends

The pair finished second in the Madison on day three of the UCI Track World Cup in Colombia.

FELIX ENGLISH AND Mark Downey have capped one of Irish cycling’s most successful weekends with a silver medal in the Madison event on day three of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Cali, Colombia last night.

The pair finished behind the Danish duo of Casper Von Folsach and Niklas Larsen to add a third medal in as many days for team Ireland.

“Yeoooooo” tweeted English after the race:

Last night’s success follows individual gold for Downey in the men’s points race on Friday night and a bronze for Galway’s Lydia Gurley in the women’s scratch race on Saturday.

A 120-lap (30km) team event, the Madison has been added to the track programme for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020.

Racing in relay style, the riders tag each other in every couple of laps.

Speaking after the race, Downey told Cycling Ireland:

“I really enjoyed the moment with Felix. He was super out there tonight – World Class. He deserves this as we’ve worked just as hard as each other, and like I’ve said from the start, it’s only the beginning.”

A great weekend for Irish cycling just got even better
