Doug Howlett: injury blow. INPHO/Lorraine O'Sullivan

Doug Howlett ruled out for the season

Munster coach Tony McGahan will have to plan without winger who faces surgery on achilles injury.

DOUG HOWLETT WILL miss the rest of Munster’s season.

Scans have confirmed the winger has suffered an Achilles tendon injury, the province said.

The former All Blacks star will require surgery – which is penciled in for tomorrow – to repair the damage and is facing 6-8 weeks out of action.

This is the final year on Howlett’s contract, but asked by TV3′s Sinead Kissane earlier if the New Zealander would stay on, manager Tony McGahan said: ‘we’ll have to wait and see. Doug’s very keen to continue’.

In better news for Munster fans, Keith Earls will return to training this week and may be fit enough to face Scarlets at Thomond Park.
