Disappointment for Harrington and McDowell in California

Both Irish golfers have missed the cut at the Northern Trust Open.

BOTH PADRAIG HARRINGTON and Graeme McDowell have missed the cut at the Northern Trust Open in California overnight.

McDowell’s one-over-par 73 left him on three-over for the tournament, one shot beyond the cut, while Harrington’s 77 on the first day did most of the damage to his prospects.

The Dubliner managed a much-improved 71 in the second round but still finished on six-over for the tournament.

It was a much better day for Luke Donald, the world number three, who sits on seven-under for the tournament, just two shots off joint leaders Sang-moon Bae and Fredrik Jacobsen.

Donald told www.pgatour.com: “Happy with my score, obviously coming off a pretty good break, you never know with how you’re going to deal with being back in competition again but certainly a big improvement today, ball striking wise and my short game has been very sharp.

“I’ve been excited about that. It’s been a big key to my score so far, and, yeah, excited to be in the mix again.”

Dustin Johnson, Mike Weir, Zach Johnson, Geoff Ogilvy, Bubba Watson and Lucas Glover were some of the other big names to miss the cut.
