TJ Dillashaw to begin journey back to title contention with revenge mission at UFC 200

A fine addition to the 9 July card.

TJ DILLASHAW’S QUEST to avenge his last loss will begin with a separate revenge mission this summer.

The former UFC bantamweight champion, who was dethroned by Dominick Cruz in January, will be back in action at UFC 200 in Las Vegas on 9 July.

Dillashaw (12-3) will face Raphael Assuncao (23-10), who defeated him via split decision when they met in Assuncao’s native Brazil back in October 2013.

The bout will also offer Assuncao a chance to put forward his own case for a title shot in the 135lbs division, as he returns to the octagon for the first time in 21 months following a series of injuries, seeking an eighth consecutive victory.

Dillashaw had been hoping to secure an immediate shot at redemption against Cruz, but the reigning champion will instead put the belt on the line in a rubber match with Urijah Faber, Dillashaw’s former team-mate, on 4 June.

UFC 200, which will be headlined by the light-heavyweight title unification bout between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones, currently looks like this:

Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones
Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar
Miesha Tate vs. Amanda Nunes
Cain Velasquez vs. Travis Browne
Johny Hendricks vs. Kelvin Gastelum
Gegard Mousasi vs. Derek Brunson
Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Lauzon
Sage Northcutt vs. Enrique Marin
Takanori Gomi vs. Jim Miller
Cat Zingano vs. Julianna Pena
TJ Dillashaw vs. Raphael Assuncao
