Di Canio set for talks with Sunderland - reports

The former Swindon Town boss is being lined up to replace Martin O’Neill according to a number of reports.

PAOLO DI CANIO will hold talks with Sunderland about taking the vacant manager’s role if reports are to be believed.

The 44-year-old Italian has been out of a job since leaving League One outfit Swindon Town last month and has been installed as the bookies’ favourite to replace Martin O’Neill.

Many were shocked when the Black Cats announced O’Neill’s sacking after their 1-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United last night.  The club lie just one point outside the drop zone and chairman Ellis Short decided to call time on the former Leicester and Celtic boss’ 16-month reign.

Di Canio’s appointment would be seen as a significant gamble during a crucial time of the season for Sunderland as he has no experience at the top level and is seen as a volatile character.
