Racehorse trainer Dessie Hughes has died at the age of 71

He enjoyed much success as a jockey and as a trainer.

RACEHORSE TRAINER DESSIE Hughes has dies aged 71. Hughes was successful as both a trainer and a jockey, winning at the Cheltenham Festival in both disciplines.

His most famous success in the saddle came at the 1977 Cheltenham Festival when he partnered Davy Lad to success at the Gold Cup.

As a trainer his many successes included victory in the Champion Hurdle with Hardy Eustace.

His son Richard is English Flat Jockey Champion.
