ANOTHER WEEK, ANOTHER narrow victory for Cork City has kept them in the race for the Airtricity League Premier Division title.
However, while there wasn’t quite the late drama produced by Colin Healy last weekend, John O’Flynn’s first half goal was enough for his side to remain in second position just four points behind Dundalk.
It looked like it would be a much more comfortable win this week when, in the 13th minute, Josh O’Shea escaped down the left. O’Flynn was quickest to react to his low cross and his finish gave Ger Doherty no chance in the Derry goal.

However, the Derry keeper won the next round of their personal dual seven minutes later when O’Flynn was unable to take advantage of a Dean Jarvis slip.
It was far from one way traffic though as the home side almost equalised less than a minute later when Philip Lowry’s effort was cleared off the line by Brian Lenihan.
The Munster outfit should have doubled their lead on 56 minutes when Ross Gaynor’s free-kick found Darren Dennehy. However, the defender could only direct his header onto the upright.
The woodwork would come to Cork’s rescue late in the game when Mark Timlin’s miss-hit shot beat the ‘keeper but, luckily for McNulty, hit the crossbar and it finished 1-0.

In tonight’s first division games, Wexford Youths and Shelbourne played out a 1-1 draw while Finn Harps had a 2-0 win over Waterford United.
Jordan Loftus score both goals in the first half for Harps who remain in mid-table.
Third placed Youths were unable to close the gap on their Dublin opponents in second spot despite Kilian Cantwell’s early second half goal cancelling out Alan O’Sullivan’s 13th minute opener.
