OFFALY GAA IS in mourning following the sudden death of U21 hurling manager Dermot Hogan.

The 45-year-old died yesterday following a tragic accident while working at his home.

County chairman Padraig Boland led the tributes to the Coolderry man who was a stalwart of hurling in Offaly.

He took charge of the U21s for the first time this year following club success and a stint as a selector with the county minors last season.

“Dermot’s positivity towards Offaly hurling was infectious,” Boland said.

“While Dermot’s loss to Coolderry and Offaly hurling will be huge, it pales into insignificance when compared to the loss that will be felt by his wife Marie and family and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this extremely sad time.”

GAA President Liam O’Neill added his sympathies and said: “Dermot’s passing is an enormous loss to the GAA, his county Offaly and his club Coolderry.

He held a very special place in the hearts of his local community and was involved from the grassroots up.

O’Neill praised Mr Hogan’s “outstanding” commitment to his club and said: “He was a true GAA man and I know the sense of shock and loss throughout the local community has been widespread.”

Mr Hogan is survived by his wife Marie and his daughters Lisa, Rachel and Ciara as well as his parents Kieran and Margaret and brothers Kevin and Eugene.
