The last link to Westmeath's 2004 Leinster-winning team has called it a day

WESTMEATH FORWARD DENIS Glennon has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

The Tyrrellspass clubman made his senior debut in 2004, and the side went on to win their only Leinster senior football title that year.

Glennon was part of the squad that won the Division 4 National League title in April, the last link to that 2004 Leinster-winning team.

He captained the Lake County in 2011, and also has a Division 2 league title under his belt in the maroon jersey.

Westmeath GAA hailed him as one of their ‘best-ever forwards’ on Facebook earlier, sharing that he had scored 11-231 in total for the county, making him Westmeath’s third highest scorer ever.

Glennon announced the news on his own Facebook account earlier:

“It’s with a heavy heart I am announcing my retirement from inter-county football with Westmeath,” he wrote.

“Unfortunately, there comes a time when the body tells you enough is enough.

“I would like to thank my beautiful wife Regina and my family for the support over the years. It was a dream come true to represent my county since U14. I am so grateful for the friends I have made and the structure it gave my life, especially since ’04.

“I want to wish the current manager and the Westmeath team all the best for the future. I look forward to bringing my son to support the team in the future. Thanks for the memories.”

The news comes as his side Tyrrellspass were defeated in the county final yesterday, beaten by St Loman’s on a scoreline of 3-13 to 0-14.
