Denis Behan's return to Cork City is the real transfer news of the day

Shamrock Rovers have also confirmed that Reading striker Karl Sheppard has returned to the club on a short-term loan.

FORGET ABOUT BECKHAM and Becchio — the big transfer news of the day is that Denis Behan has re-signed for Cork City.

The 29-year-old striker, who left Cork for League One side Hartlepool in 2009, returns to Turner’s Cross after training with the club in pre-season.

Behan’s strike won the FAI Cup for City in 2007 and he promised today to be even more prolific during his second stint on Leeside.

“My aim this year is goals,” he told CorkCityFC.net.

With Cork City I was probably better known for scoring spectacular goals more than scoring a lot of goals, and that is something I have been working on a lot in the time since I left the club; getting into the right positions to get on the end of things.

We have a good all-round team, but we need to get the goals in order to win games.

His first league match for Cork could come against some familiar faces as Tommy Dunne’s men kick off the new campaign Limerick FC, Behan’s club last season, in a Munster derby on 8 March.

Meanwhile Shamrock Rovers have completed the signing of former striker Karl Sheppard on a short-term loan from Reading.

Sheppard, 21, traded Tallaght for the Madejski Stadium after helping Rovers win the league title in 2011. He since had a loan at Accrington Stanley and now returns to Rovers until July 2013.
