David O'Leary is €4 million richer now

The former Republic of Ireland captain has won his contract dispute with Al Ahli.

DAVID O’LEARY WILL receive a €4 million pay-off from his former club Al Ahli.

O’Leary, who turned 55 yesterday, won his long-running dispute with Dubai club following their decision to terminate his contract.

The former Republic of Ireland captain took over as Al Ahli manager in 2010 but was sacked just one year into a three-year fixed term.

After taking his case to FIFA, O’Leary was awarded the full amount of $5.2 million in compensation by the Players’ Status Committee.

Al Ahli argued that O’Leary had in fact abandoned his job despite openly telling the media at the time that he had been dismissed, the League Managers Association said in a statement this morning.

They also argued that FIFA lacked the jurisdiction to hear the claim.

“FIFA rejected both lines of defence and awarded O’Leary, who was backed by the League Managers Association and represented by Paul Gilroy QC and Michael Kennedy, the full sum due under his contract.”
