Joy for David Oliver Joyce as another Irish boxer qualifies for the Rio Olympics

The lightweight is the sixth Irish boxer to guarantee his participation at this summer’s Games.

IRELAND’S DAVID OLIVER Joyce has booked his place at this summer’s Olympic Games with a victory in his European qualifier box-off this afternoon.

The Athy lightweight faced Turkey’s Volkan Gokcek in Samsun and came out on top by split decision after taking the first and final rounds.

Having missed out on the Beijing and London Games, this will be Joyce’s first appearance at the Olympics.

Joyce, who is a cousin of John Joe Joyce and Joe Ward, becomes the sixth Irish boxer and the 65th Irish athlete to secure qualification.
