Former Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy seals move to Rafa Benitez's Newcastle

The Ireland international has signed a two-year deal.

IRELAND STRIKER DARYL Murphy has completed his move to Newcastle United for an undisclosed fee.

The 33-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the St James’ Park club, having handed in a transfer request to Ipswich Town yesterday, where he scored 67 times in 225 games for the Tractor Boys.

“I’m absolutely delighted to get it over the line and really looking forward to it,” Murphy told his new club’s official website.

“When I knew the club was interested, it was a no-brainer for me so I’m happy it’s all done.

“I think with the squad of players that the club have now, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.”

Rafa Benitez’s side jumped up to fourth place in the Championship table yesterday following a convincing 2-0 win over Brighton, and the former Liverpool manager believes Murphy, who made 114 appearances for North East rivals Sunderland between 2005 and 2010, can fire the Magpies back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

“Daryl has experience and has proven that he can score goals in the Championship,” Benitez said.

“He gives us another option in attack and we could see from this weekend’s game against Brighton that we needed more bodies up front.

“Daryl has a good attitude and he can be very important for us this season.”

It is understood that Ipswich have taken Ireland striker Leon Best on trial with a view to a permanent transfer, following Murphy’s departure.
