Sweetnam is part of a rare club of gifted multi-sport athlete.

Former Cork hurler Darren Sweetnam will make his Munster debut on Saturday

Sweetnam will get his first senior start on the left wing.

IT WILL BE a proud day for Darren Sweetnam this Saturday as he is in line to make his full Munster debut in the province’s friendly away to Gloucester. The former Cork hurler has been in the Munster Academy since October 2012 and he has been selected at left wing by Anthony Foley.

Sweetnam’s decision to give rugby his full commitment gained a lot of attention at the time and his steady progression has not gone unnoticed by Foley and his staff. Perhaps this stupendous try-saving tackle by the winger at the Limerick World Club 7s a few weeks ago was what finally made Foley pull the trigger on his selection.

It must be said that Sweetnam was yellow-carded for not releasing the tackler, but it was still an insane effort.

Sweetnam’s sporting prowess got us thinking about other gifted multi-sport athletes. He has a long way to go if he wants to catch former NFL and MLB star Bo Jackson.
