Arsenal's failure to sign a new striker is looking even more bizarre now

Welbeck is out “for a period of months”.

WHEN THE TRANSFER window closed on Tuesday evening, many were surprised at Arsenal’s failure to sign a new striker.

While Karim Benzema’s potential move was laughed off by the player, they had been expected to add to their cavalry up front, after selling Lukas Podolski and allowing Yaya Sanogo leave on loan to Ajax.

And their decision not to sign any reinforcements up front looks even worse today, after it was announced that Danny Welbeck would be out of action for “a period of months” following surgery to his left knee.

The news comes one year and a day since his €20m move fromm Manchester United to Arsenal, with the attacker sidelined with a knee injury since the end of April.

What’s most bizarre however, is that Arsenal’s official statement reveals that they decided to send the striker for surgery last week, giving them several days to find a potential stop-gap to boost their attacking options.

“The striker has been working throughout the summer to recover from the injury sustained at the end of April,” the statement read.

“It had been hoped he would avoid surgery but after increasing his training workload, the injury to his cartilage did not respond as well as hoped and the decision was taken last week for him to undergo surgery by a leading specialist in the field.

“Danny is now expected to be out for a period of months and everyone at Arsenal wishes him well.”

Could David De Gea pull off an incredible u-turn on his Man United career?
