THE GREEN BAY Packers inflicted a 35-14 defeat on the Chicago Bears in their NFL clash on Thursday night, but the game was marred by a worrying incident in the third quarter.
Packers’ wide receiver Davante Adams was running across the field to collect a pass from Aaron Rodgers, when he suffered a serious helmet-to-helmet collision.
Chicago linebacker Danny Trevathan came sprinting in from the side of the play where Adams was being held up, and crashed into him at head height.
Footage shows Adams’ mouth-guard flying into the air, such was the force of the tackle which could lead to a suspension for Trevathan.
Despite the horrifying images, the Packers player gave a reassuring thumbs-up to the crowd while he was being stretchered off the pitch.
Head trauma injuries and concussion cases have become somewhat synonymous with the NFL.
It was recently reported that former Patriots player Aaron Hernandez suffered from the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy CTE prior to his suicide.
This condition has been found in numerous dead ex-NFL players.
Forensic pathologist Dr Bennet Omalu previously discovered that the repeated concussive blows suffered by American football players was leading to the development of (CTE).
His work in this area was later portrayed in the film ‘Concussion,‘ which starred Will Smith.
