THE WAIT FOR the first Premier League goal of the season was 37 minutes but it was well worth it.

Having peppered the Stoke City goal for much of the first half, Liverpool hit the front through Daniel Sturridge. The striker drilled in a superb goal to give Brendan Rodger’s men the early advantage in their 1-0 victory at Anfield:

Stoke have been anything but meek and have had efforts strike the crossbar, cleared off the line and stopped by Simon Mignolet. Liverpool led 1-0 at half-time but should have stretched their advantage after the break.

Jordan Henderson struck the inside of the post with a rasping drive and Sturridge went close again, as did Philippe Coutinho. Craving three points to get their season off to a good start, Liverpool were guilty of sitting back to protect their lead narrow lead.

Stoke pressed for an equaliser and were rewarded when they got a late penalty for a handball in the Liverpool box. Ireland international Jonathan Walters stepped up to salvage a point only to met with heroic resistance from goalkeeper Simon Mignolet:
