Curtis breaks drought in Texas

The 34-year-old American managed a birdie on the final hole to clinch his first PGA Tour win since 2006.

AMERICAN BEN CURTIS yesterday shot even par on the final day to hold on and win the Texas Open, just the fourth of his career on the PGA tour.

Curtis went into the final round with a three-shot lead and although Matt Every and John Huh threatened to overtake him throughout the day, the 34-year-old managed a birdie on the final hole to win on nine under for the tournament.

Every and Huh tied for second on seven under. Curtis was one under for the day going into the back nine but bogeys on the 11th and 12th holes threatened to derail his tournament.

The 34-year-old rallied, however, to stay ahead of Every and Huh before his birdie on the 18th ensured Curtis’ first victory on the PGA Tour since 2006. Earlier in the day, Every hit four birdies in the first six holes to move within one shot of Curtis, while Huh made a late charge with three birdies on the back nine, although neither player drew level with Curtis in the final round.

The big mover of the day was Brendan Steele who shot five under on Sunday to move up to fourth overall alongside fellow Americans Bob Estes, Brian Gay and Korean Charlie Wi.
