All-Ireland champions Corofin survive major scare in Galway quarter-final

The champions finished all square with Tuam Stars last night.

THE REIGNING ALL-Ireland, Connacht and Galway senior club football champions Corofin survived a huge scare in the defence of their title last night when they rescued a draw in their county quarter-final tie.

Clashing against near neighbours Tuam Stars, Corofin hit the last three points of the game to rescue a 1-8 to 0-11 draw in the match played in Tuam Stadium.

Corofin, who triumphed in Croke Park last St Patrick’s Day, were ahead 0-6 to 0-5 at the break before conceding a second-half goal that put them under huge pressure.

Galway senior Gary O’Donnell raised the green flag and Tuam Stars, who lost county senior finals in 2011 and 2012, were ahead 1-8 to 0-8 as they closed in on a potentially major victory.

But Corofin launched a fightback to keep their interest in this year’s championship alive and force a replay.

The remaining three quarter-final ties all take place today. There’s a double-header in Pearse Stadium with Leitir Mór facing Killanin at 4.30pm and Cortoon Shamrocks taking on An Cheathrú Rua at 6.15pm.

In Tuam Stadium, at 6pm there’s a last eight clash between Annaghdown and Mountbellew-Moylough.
