Corkman close to being named Open Water swimmer of the year

Former rugby player Stephen Redmond became the first man to complete the ‘Ocean’s Seven’ challenge last summer.

IRISH SWIMMER STEPHEN REDMOND is closing in on being named ‘man of the year’ in the World Open Water Swimming Association’s 2012 awards poll.

Last summer, the Cork swimmer became the first person in the world to complete all seven open-water swims that make up the Ocean’s Seven.

Having already swum the Irish Channel, The English Channel, The Strait of Gibraltar, The Cook Strait, The Molokai Channel and The Catalina Channel, the former rugby player headed for Japan to tackle the Tsugaru Strait at a distance of 12.5 miles.
