Cork book Munster minor final place after they see off Waterford

Waterford’s missed penalty in the first-half was a crucial moment in the game.

Cork 1-14
Waterford 1-8

CORK PRODUCED AN impressive second-half performance to see off Waterford in the semi-final of the Electric Ireland Munster MFC at Fraher Field this evening.

Though Cork – playing against the wind – got the best possible start as Seán O’Donoghue’s goal helped to move them into a 1-2 to no-score lead, it took them more than a while to shake off the challenge of their hosts.

Cork were not helped by some sloppy wides, but with full-back Jack Guiry and full-forward Conor Gleeson leading the charge, Waterford began to feel their way into the game and then managed to engineer a great opportunity.

The scoreline stood at 1-4 to 0-2 for Cork when Waterford captain Aaron Donnelly was fouled under a dropping ball in the large rectangle but Gleeson’s penalty was expertly saved by the Rebels’ goalkeeper Colm O’Driscoll.

In fairness to Gleeson, he kicked two points in quick succession after that to cut the gap to just a goal but points from Shane Kingston and Damien Buckley ensured that Cork led by five at half-time.

Joe Allen and Jack Mullaney were on target as Waterford again got to within a goal at the start of the second half, 1-6 to 0-6, but by the time they next scored, courtesy of a Joe Allen free in the 50th minute, Cork had added seven, with Kingston and Michael Hurley impressing.

Only six points separated the sides at the end after Mullaney’s late goal, but there was still no stopping Cork moving into a first minor final against neighbours Kerry since 2010.

Scorers for Cork: Shane Kingston 0-4, Seán O’Donoghue 1-1, Michael Hurley 0-3 (0-1 free), Damien Buckley (0-1 free), Maidhc Ó Duinnín 0-2 each, Séamus Ronayne, Gary Murphy 0-1 each.

Scorers for Waterford: Conor Gleeson 0-4 (0-2 frees), Jack Mullaney 1-1, Joe Allen 0-2 (frees), Conor Murray 0-1.
