ST. PATRICK’S ATHLETIC began their defence of the SSE Airticity League Premier Division title with a draw as Christy Fagan’s 56th-minute equaliser gave them a point against 10-man Cork City at Turner’s Cross tonight.
Before 5,322 – kick-off was delayed by 10 minutes – Cork had led 1-0 at half-time after pressure in the period before the break paid off through Garry Buckley’s goal. Liam Buckley’s side kept their composure though and patiently forged an opening.

When Lee Lynch – a late replacement for the injured Killian Brennan – picked the ball up on the right flank little appeared on, but his cross was perfectly weighted to allow Fagan to head beyond Mark McNulty to the bottom corner of the net.
Pat’s may be disappointed that they could not kick on and take all three points, especially as Cork lost captain John Dunleavy to a second booking midway through the second half. That caution was one of six the home side received on the night, including four in the first half, whereas the only two for Pat’s came in the final six minutes
Despite their misgivings about the performance of referee Pádraigh Sutton, however, the City faithful will be pleased at having managed to take something off the champions on John Caulfield’s managerial bow.
After early Pat’s pressure – conducted by Keith Fahey – was weathered, Cork asserted themselves in the latter period of the first half and Buckley’s goal was just reward. He headed home following a corner after Ken Oman had kept out Dunleavy’s effort.
They found themselves penned in more at the outset of the second half however and Fagan’s goal ensured that Pat’s took something from the encounter.
CORK CITY: McNulty; Lenihan, Murray, D Dennehy, Dunleavy (c); Kearney, G Morrissey, Buckley, Healy, B Dennehy; Elding (O’Sullivan 65).
