Cork too strong for Laois as they collect first Division 1B hurling league win

Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s triumphed in Portlaoise tonight.

Cork 0-14
Laois 0-7

JIMMY BARRY-MURPHY saw his Cork side pick up their first victory in the Allianz hurling league tonight as they had seven points to spare over Laois.

After last week’s draw at home to Limerick, Cork bounced back to win on the road in O’Moore Park in Portlaoise.

A strong opening-half display paved the way for Cork’s victory as they lead 0-11 to 0-3 at the interval.

Patrick Horgan was again hugely influential in the scoring stakes while newcomer Alan Cadogan also showed up well and Seamus Harnedy picked off a brace of points.

Laois were too reliant on Stephen Maher’s free taking while they also missed a penalty when goalkeeper Eoghan Reilly came upfield and saw his effort thwarted by Darren McCarthy.

In the second-half Laois maintained their resilience to strike a series of points from Maher frees and a Tommy Fitzgerald effort from play. By the 53rd minute, they trailed by 0-12 to 0-6.

But Cork closed out the game from there to claim the spoils by seven points.
