CORK CAMOGIE BOSS Paudie Murray has played down claims his side were disrespectful towards the victorious Kilkenny team during the post-match formalities yesterday.
Kilkenny manager Ann Downey expressed her disappointment at Cork’s decision to warm down while Cats captain Meighan Farrell was presented with the National League trophy.
Kilkenny backed up last September’s All-Ireland final victory with a 2-7 to 0-10 win at the Gaelic Grounds, but Downey was critical of the Cork camp afterwards.
“It just doesn’t happen, to be quite honest,” she told KCLR yesterday.
“We can’t control what the Cork people will do or what the Cork players will do. You wouldn’t want to see it happening too often, to be honest.
“We just hope that our own team would always show respect to the opposition. I think they have done that.”
According to Downey’s opposite number Murray, the Rebelettes were gracious in defeat.
“To be honest I don’t know where it’s coming from,” he told KCLR this morning.
“As I said to you off air one thing that we always say to our players is you shake hands with your opponent and your team-mate after the game. We do it in training, you have got to have that respect.
“It was certainly done. I know I came into the middle of the field and all our players congratulated their opponents.
“We were in a circle in the middle of the field, granted the PA system wasn’t great there so it was very difficult to understand or hear any of the speeches, but I don’t know where it is coming from. It’s from someone that has very little to do on a Monday morning.”

For better or worse, the done thing in GAA, camogie, and Ladies Football is for the losers to actually watch the presentation ceremony, applaud in all the right places, etc. If the Cork team really did do their warm down instead during this time – which meant none of them paying full attention to the ceremony, and probably half of them turning their backs on it – then yes, that’s out of order.
@Jumperoo: They were in a big circle laying off doing stretches, with they’re trainer walking around telling them what to do.Paudie Muarry should have just tried to bypass that question, and not be obnoxious to give an answer like that
She’s bang on, it was bad form. Especially as Cork were no doubt mentioned in the Captain’s speech. Disrespectful of them to ignore the presentation.
If the Cork management couldn’t hear the Kilkenny captains acceptance speech well then they should have moved their team closer to the presentation area.
To form a circle and thus have a significant percentage of the Cork players with their backs to the KK captain as she made her speech was at low water disrespectful and could be considered downright insulting.
This would have been bad enough but to then add further insult with a comment like that the following day is petty in the extreme. I’m sure the great sporting people of Cork are very disappointed and feel left down today, clearly not the players fault as they were under instruction. Bad day for ladies sport I’m afraid.
If its true very disrespectful. Is the manager saying they did or did,nt warm down during presentation? Sore losers if they did and i,m from Cork.
Also from cork. Very disappointing. Whether you can hear them or not, stand facing them and afford them the respect they deserve. If it was vice versa you can be sure we’d have taken issue. Stupid answer as well.
I was at the game and felt at the time it was very disrespectful. It’s a pity something like this is being spoken about rather than KK’s great display. Cork are a serious team and will have a big say in the All Ireland
Mother has an All Ireland medal for Cork but that was shocking. Really sums up where Cork GAA is at the moment. The Managers “Muppet ” statement says it all. Hang your heads. Manager should be removed.
To be fair this was a curtain riser to the main event and there wasn’t much time after the final whistle to hang around the field so I can’t blame Cork for getting on with there warm down, the lads were out warming up nearly straight away
@kkloseconair: If that was indeed the case and the Cork team had to decide between respecting the opposition or warming down, you still respect the opposition and the sport.
There’s alot of stuff going on behind the scenes. You have to be in there to understand . There’s a storm coming.
FFS Grow up, What a load of s**t, I’m sure Kilkenny would have done the same
