As It Happened: Cork v Galway, All-Ireland SHC semi-final

Would Anthony Cunningham’s Tribesmen repeat their Leinster final form and storm to success? Or would it be Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s Rebels who secured their place in the All-Ireland senior hurling final? Here’s how it all unfolded.

The first place in this year’s All-Ireland senior hurling final was up for grabs today as Cork and Galway squared off.

We were live from Croke Park with all the action.

Galway 0-1 Cork 0-0: 1 mins – Dream start for Galway with Damien Hayes popping over a point after Brian Murphy miscontrolled the ball.

Galway 0-1 Cork 0-1: 2 mins – Cork draw level quickly courtesy of a Patrick Horgan pointed free.

Cork 0-2 Galway 0-1: 3 mins – Long range free by Anthony Nash breaks kindly for Cork wing-forward Jamie Coughlan and he bounds onto the ball before lobbing over a point.

Conor Lehane has a chance to point for Cork but is denied by an outstanding dispossession by Galway captain Fergal Moore who flicks the ball away expertly.

Niall Burke shoots wide for Galway from a good position. Players on both sides look nervous so far, committing basic mistakes.

Cork 0-3 Galway 0-1: 6 mins – Cork move further ahead with a fine point by Cian McCarthy but then Patrick Cronin spurns a good chance to score, firing wide from midfield.

Cork 0-3 Galway 0-2: 8 mins – Joe Canning grabs his first point of the day, converting a free for Galway.

Cork 0-4 Galway 0-3: 12 mins – Joe Canning fires over a free for Galway after Niall Burke had been fouled.

Cork 0-6 Galway 0-4: 17 mins – That is excellent play from Cork. Anthony Nash stops a Joe Canning shot from going over the bar at one end, Eoin Cadogan clears the ball and captain Patrick Horgan does brilliantly to field it before being fouled. The Glen Rovers man dusts himself down and slots over the free.

Galway 0-6 Cork 0-5: 19 mins – Back to a one-point game when Canning bangs over a free after Iarla Tannian was fouled by Patrick Cronin.

Cork 0-7 Galway 0-5: 20 mins – Lovely point by Paudie O’Sullivan for Cork as he breaks onto a good cross field pass by Brian Murphy.

Cork 0-7 Galway 0-6: 22 mins – Joe Canning tears through the Cork defence are being fed by Conor Cooney and smashes over a point. Hint of a goal threat there initially. One point in it and a fine contest so far.

Half a goal chance for Galway but Conor Cooney’s ground shot is blocked by Anthony Nash.

Cork 0-7 Galway 0-7: 25 mins – Nash is subsequently shouldered over the end line by Cooney and a ’65 is awarded which Canning converts to tie the match.

Cork 0-8 Galway 0-7: 26 mins – It’s an extremely tight match with Cork just back in front again. Patrick Horgan clips over a free after Conor Lehane was fouled.

Galway 0-13 Cork 0-12: 39 mins – Damien Hayes edges Galway ahead when he points. It’s a really tight contest and it looks like the first goal will be a critical score.

Galway 0-14 Cork 0-12: 41 mins – Joe Canning lofts over a fine point for Galway after David Burke picked him out with an excellent pass.

Darren Sweetnam is coming on for Cork instead of Conor Lehane. Patrick Cronin is switched to the half-forward line with Sweetnam going in at midfield.

Galway 0-15 Cork 0-12: 46 mins – Sustained Galway pressure with Joe Canning at the heart of their attacks culminates in Niall Burke grabbing his first point of the game. They’ve opened up a three-point gap now.

Galway 0-15 Cork 0-13: 47 mins – A vital point for Cork by Patrick Horgan, from play, after Galway had opened up that lead.

Galway 0-16 Cork 0-13: 48 mins – Fine point for Galway from Niall Burke after he was fed by Johnny Coen who broke out of defence.

Cork’s deliveries into their attack have been poor in this second-half and they need to improve if they are to get the scores to work back into contention.

Cork substitution with Stephen Moylan coming on in attack for Luke O’Farrell.

Galway 0-17 Cork 0-13: 52 mins – Galway point a ’65 through Joe Canning but the damage could have been far worse for Cork as they needed Anthony Nash to produce a point-blank save to deny Niall Burke the first goal of the game. Galway in the ascendancy though.

Galway 0-17 Cork 0-14: 53 mins – Cork needed that point with Darren Sweetnam showing the  composure to land a shot from the wing. Davy Glennon is on the Galway team for Conor Cooney.

Galway 0-18 Cork 0-15: 56 mins – Cork come so close to the first goal of the game. Anthony Nash’s huge free is caught by Patrick Cronin on the edge of the square and after he turns, his shot just flashes over the bar.

Galway 0-18 Cork 0-16: 57 mins – Another important point for Cork, this time from substitute Cathal Naughton.

Galway 0-19 Cork 0-16: 59 mins – That’s a brilliant point by James Regan for Galway, tearing through the defence and scoring under pressure.

Galway substitution sees Cyril Donnellan in for James Regan.

Galway 0-20 Cork 0-17: 63 mins – Anthony Nash fires over a stunning long-range free for Cork but Galway’s Andy Smith quickly cancels that out with a point.

Anthony Nash misses a chance to grab a point for Cork from a free around midfield.

Jonathan Glynn on for Galway instead of Niall Burke as Niall McCarthy misses a decent chance to point for Cork.

Paudie O’Sullivan has just received a yellow card for a late challenge on Galway’s Joe Canning, who is now on the ground receiving treatment. Daniel Kearney into the Cork team for Lorcan McLoughlin.

Galway 0-21 Cork 0-17: 69 mins – Canning recovers and registers a point from a free that could be the insurance score for Galway.

Three minutes of injury-time will be played.

Galway 0-22 Cork 0-17: 71 mins – That should be that. Damien Hayes sends Galway five points clear as he raises a white flag.

Galway substitution sees Joseph Cooney in for David Burke.

FULL-TIME: Galway 0-22 Cork 0-17: That’s it, Galway triumph by a five-point margin and book their place in this year’s All-Ireland final.

That’s all from Croke Park as Galway celebrate their triumph while Cork’s campaign comes to an end. Thanks for joining us and here are the scorers from today’s game.

i heard alot of complaints about the ref alright but to be honest I saw no major problems with him, although I have never been Brians biggest fan. I think ye have a good chance in the final if ye can up the performance. The first half today was not the Galway we saw last outing but saying that I think ye have a really good chance. Cheers, quietly confident with the football. Best of luck in the final. Next week will tell alot….

It seems Cork can only play by cheating. Galway seem to have better players and more beautiful women.

I was disappointed with the game of hurling today and particularly with Cork. They left the Galway forwards free to roam around all day and made many school boy errors. Galway should have won by much more which leads me to think Kilkenny or Tipp should win it out easily. Cork have many young lads who have to earn bags more experience before they are ready to win an all Ireland. Congrats to Galway, I hope they win it out. Bring on the football!
