CORK CITY KEPT their fading title hopes alive with a determined 2-0 win against Finn Harps at a saturated Turner’s Cross this evening.
The torrid conditions made play difficult, though Karl Sheppard had little excuse for firing over Kevin O’Connor’s excellent cut-back following Kenny Browne’s incisive through ball.
Harps were defensively solid however and Dave Scully had Mark McNulty at full stretch to gather his long-range effort.
As the rain got heavier towards half-time City struck just before the break; Kevin O’Connor’s in-swinging corner saw Sean Maguire nip in ahead of Harps netminder Ciarán Gallagher to head into an empty net.

With puddles appearing referee Rob Rogers resumed play, and just before the hour mark John Caulfield’s side got the insurance they craved.
Damien McNulty misjudged a long ball, allowing substitute Mark O’Sullivan possession, he found Maguire who played a beautiful through ball on to Stephen Dooley.
With plenty still left to do the former Derry City winger was unfazed by a puddle that stopped the ball virtually in its tracks, checking his run, and poking it into the bottom left-hand corner.
Gareth Harkin stung the palms of McNulty before Maguire could have doubled his tally five minutes from time, but off-balance he could only poke it into the arms of an already-committed Gallagher.
Three points is enough for the Leesiders to keep pace however they travel to Inchicore to face St Patrick’s Athletic on Monday night.
