Double date for Cork City on FAI Cup final day as UCD edge past holders Shels

Cork City and UCD Waves will meet on 5 November in the WFAI Cup final.

THERE’LL BE TWO Cork City sides in action in the Aviva Stadium on FAI Cup final day, as Frank Kelleher’s outfit booked their spot in the WFAI Cup final with a win over Wexford Youths earlier today.

City will face UCD Waves, meaning there’ll be a new name of the trophy as they edged past reigning champions Shelbourne.

Deadlocked at half-time, Meghan Bourque drew first blood for City shortly after the restart as she got on the end of a Maggie Duncliffe free-kick.

Former Glasgow FC striker Clare Shine doubled her side’s lead as underage international and Cork Gaelic football minor star Saoirse Noonan played her through on goal.

As the final few minutes approached, City’s defence were put under pressure as Youths dominated possession but failed to make a breakthrough.

At the other end however, Katie McCarthy produced a stunning effort to make it 3-0 and cement City’s place in the final on 5 November.

In the later semi-final fixture, UCD Waves knocked holders Shelbourne out of the running and booked their ticket to the Aviva with a 1-0 win at Jackson Park.

Claire Walsh’s goal in the first half was enough to get UCD over the line, and to set up a final with Cork City.
