CORK CITY secured a vital win on the road as three set-piece goals saw them overcome gritty Galway United at Eamonn Deacy Park.
Dan Murray headed the Leesiders in front before a Colm Horgan own-goal on the stroke of half time doubled their lead. Jason Molloy’s breathtaking strike immediately after the restart sparked Galway into life before Garry Buckley sealed the points for City late on.
The visitors dominated the early proceedings and almost went ahead when United defender Sam Oji deflected a John Kavanagh cross onto his own crossbar. Just a minute later Cork did have the ball in the net when Billy Dennehy’s free kick from the right was met by Murray’s lopping header which found the bottom corner.

Cork continued to control the game with Galway failing to find rhythm, as Dennehy and Mark O’Sullivan both went close before Cork doubled their lead when Dennehy’s free-kick was deflected into his own net by the unlucky Horgan on the stroke of half time.
After the restart Eamonn Deacy Park exploded into life when Jason Molloy was granted rare space by the visitors and let fly into the corner from almost 30 yards in a huge contender for goal of the month.
This gave Galway the jolt they needed as Jake Keegan and Enda Curran both went close with midfielder David O’Leary starting to boss midfield against his old club.
At the other end Conor Gleeson showed form hands to deny Colin Healy as substitute Karl Sheppard fired over from close range, with Galway still working hard to create a chance to square the game.
Another Dennehy free-kick was blocked by the wall and his second bite of the cherry struck the post, before Garry Buckley sealed the points late on when Galway were again exposed from a set piece, as Healy’s corner broke to the unmarked midfielder who sealed the points.
GALWAY UNITED: Conor Gleeson; Colm Horgan, Sam Oji, Stephen Walsh, Marc Ludden; Gary Shanahan, David O’Leary, Ryan Connolly, Jason Molloy; Jake Keegan, Enda Curran (Padraic Cunningham, 82).
