SEÁN MAGUIRE AND Karl Sheppard each scored twice as Cork City got their first league win since 10 July to stay within four points of Dundalk at the top of the SSE Airtricity Premier Division table.
While their Europa League odyssey had taken up much of the interim focus, home games against Sligo Rovers and Bohemians since then had only yielded a point. They did show some form in defeating Longford 4-1 in the FAI Cup last week though and carried that on here.
The game wasn’t even six minutes old when Alan Bennett headed home from a corner by Kevin O’Connor and the lead was doubled when Maguire slotted home from Stephen Dooley’s pass.

Maguire got his second and City’s third before the half hour, converting from the penalty spot after Bennett was fouled, but the guilty player, Peter McGlynn, did make up for that as he netted for Longford before half-time, Eddie Dsane the architect.
Soon after the restart, Maguire’s through ball allowed Karl Sheppard to make it 4-1 and both Sheppard and sub Chiedozie Ogbene went close to more. McGlynn scored again for Longford on 87, but Sheppard had the final say with his second.
CORK CITY: Mark McNulty; Steven Beattie, Alan Bennett, Kenny Browne (Dave Mulcahy 58), Kevin O’Connor; Greg Bolger, Gearóid Morrissey (Colin Healy 62); Karl Sheppard, Gavan Holohan, Stephen Dooley (Chiedozie Ogbene 79), Seán Maguire.
