Gifts galore as Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Inter Milan wish Cork City a happy 30th birthday

Arsene Wenger and Karl-Heinze Rummenigge have both written to the club in advance of its anniversary on Saturday.

WITH CORK CITY currently flying high in the league, the timing couldn’t be better to celebrate thirty illustrious years in existence. The big day happens on Saturday, 19th July and the club has been inundated with messages of support from some of Europe’s most storied and successful clubs.

On Monday, a special present arrived from Italian giants Inter Milan – a signed shirt with a memorable name and number combination on the back.

On Wednesday morning, a number of interesting letters arrived in the post. The first was from Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who passed on his congratulations.

Then, it was the turn of Liverpool to send along something nice.

Leeds United also got in on the act.

But Bayern Munich outdid themselves with a lovely, personal gesture. The Bavarians have had a long-running association with Cork City ever since the sides met in a famous two-legged UEFA Cup clash in 1991.

The current club chairman and German footballing legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge wrote to the Rebel Army, recalled the encounter from over twenty years ago and outlined his hope that the two teams would meet again, but in the Champions League. A nice touch.

Some of Cork City’s most famous sons have also paid tribute ahead of this weekend’s celebrations. Kevin Doyle, who spent a couple of seasons with the club prior to his switch to England, sent along this video message and is hoping such a unique season for City can be topped off with another league title.
