Cork City regained the lead in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division for the first time since April 25 as Billy Dennehy’s goal gave them victory over Bohemians at Turner’s Cross tonight.
In first-half injury time, Dennehy’s free kick from just inside the Bohs half managed to travel all the way to Dean Delany’s net and it proved to be enough to give John Caulfield’s side a sixth straight league win.
It was nervy at times for the hosts, especially in a lacklustre first half, with little in the way of goalmouth action before things hotted up as half-time neared. Bohs’ brightest first-half performer, Dinny Corcoran headed wide from a Jack Memery cross but then City got going.

Mark O’Sullivan was unlucky to be denied by a good Dean Delany save after Colin Healy and Garry Buckley had done well and then Dennehy netted from long-range following a foul on John Kavanagh.
With the half-time lead, Cork were more relaxed early in the second half and should probably have scored a second, with John O’Flynn and Billy Dennehy going close. They were helped when Bohs captain Dave Mulcahy was sent off for a second booking, though, and the visitors never really threatened with 10 men.
Things got worse for them when sub Stephen Best saw red late on and while it was never fully comfortable for City, they deserved the win. They now go to Oriel Park to face Dundalk next week knowing that a draw will make them champions for the first time since 2005.
CORK CITY: McNulty; Kavanagh, Murrday, D Dennehy, McSweeney; Healy, Dunleavy; O’Flynn (O’Shea 66), Buckley, B Dennehy; O’Sullivan.
