Cork City sign Lithuanian U21 international following Browne's controversial departure

Rimvydas Sadauskas has arrived at Turner’s Cross on a loan deal.

JOHN CAULFIELD HAS made another addition to his squad ahead of their SSE Airtricity League Premier Division opener away to Finn Harps.

Cork City have this evening announced that — subject to international clearance – Rimvydas Sadauskas will join the club on loan until the summer.

With Alan Bennett set to miss Friday’s trip to Ballybofey due to injury and Kenny Browne on his way back to Waterford, the arrival of Sadauskas is a timely boost to Caulfield’s defensive options.

After last Friday’s 3-0 win against Dundalk in the President’s Cup, Caulfield revealed that Browne is returning to his hometown club following a transfer saga which the frustrated City boss described as “a soap opera”, having seen the Waterford native become a key player for his side in 2016.

A 20-year-old central defender, Sadauskas has made over 50 appearances for his parent club Stumbras, who finished sixth in the eight-team Lithuanian top flight last season. He is also a member of Lithuania’s U21 squad.

“Rimvydas has come in on loan until July and he has a very good pedigree,” Caulfield said.

“He’s only 20 years old, he has a lot of qualities and we are going to work with him over the coming weeks with a view to bringing him up to the level he needs to be at to challenge for a place in the squad.

“There is a Cork connection in his club in Lithuania and we have built up a good relationship with them over the last few weeks.”

Sadauskas is Cork City’s sixth new addition for the new season, joining Ryan Delaney, Shane Griffin, Conor McCormack, Jimmy Keohane and Achille Campion at Turner’s Cross.

‘I’m fully-confident I’ll become the player I knew I could be a couple of years ago’
