Did the officials make the right call? Controversial VAR decision boosts France

Croatia were left feeling hard done by in this afternoon’s World Cup final.

THERE WAS CONTROVERSY in this afternoon’s World Cup final, as the referee belatedly awarded a penalty in France’s favour after consulting with the video assistant.

Croatia’s Ivan Perisic was adjudged to have deliberately handballed a ball that was played into the box, though the decision has been criticised in some quarters, with former England striker and BBC presenter Gary Lineker tweeting: “Noooooooo!!!!  Can’t give that. Jeez VAR.”

Antoine Griezmann subsequently converted from the spot to put his side 2-1 up.
