AFTER CONOR NESTOR won the Cambodian championship in just his second season in charge of Svay Rieng, he was looking forward to a Christmas break back home: his first time in Limerick in two-and-a-half-years.
Inevitably, it proved too short a stint.
โI barely left Foynes, to be honest,โ he says with a laugh.
โI was relaxing in the house and then down in the local to catch up with everyone. Social media can be great in terms of being able to see the interest in what Iโm doing but thereโs nothing like meeting everybody โ especially the different generations โ and seeing how captivated they are with this kinda random story.โ
But in between the pints, Nestor was still on the clock and already knee-deep in preparations for the new campaign.
โI was recruiting a fitness coach so I found myself on Skype chatting to Spaniards in China and English guys in Singapore but thatโs par for the course.โ
Everything has been upped a notch after the title success. And last week, Svay Rieng booked their place in the AFC Cup after a play-off victory over Laos side Master 7.
Thatโs big business, especially for a Cambodian club. The continentโs secondary competition (think Europa League) gives Svay Rieng and Nestor the chance to pit themselves against some heavyweights for the first time in their history. But, theyโve been handed an intimidating task in Group G. Still, Nestor believes a strong showing later this month in the opening fixture against Ceres-Negros, a high-profile Philippines outfit, can give them some momentum for the remaining games against Bali United and Vietnamese club Than Quang Ninh.
โCeres-Negros are the top-ranked south-east Asian team in the AFC, which includes teams in the Asian Champions League,โ he says.
โThey just narrowly lost to FC Tokyo in the Champions League play-off and theyโre kinda the Barcelona of the AFC Cup, really, as theyโre almost always in the semi-finals. Also, they have quite a lot of Spanish players and the majority of the squad have grown up in Europe and been part of European academies. They have a budget thatโs five times bigger than ours.โ
โBali United play in front of 25,000 at every home game. And Than Quang Ninh would be the third-best team in Vietnam, a country thatโs probably ranked number two in south-east Asia. So thatโs our task. Itโs a complete Group of Death, like. On paper, we donโt have a hope. But, thatโs not the way weโll approach it. We know how weโll take on every game already. Ceres is the biggest possible test we could have had in the entire tournament. So, if we can get it right in the first game, weโre hoping thereโs a knock-on effect.โ
For Nestorโs group, itโs an entirely new experience and the football is only part of it. Getting to travel outside of Cambodia is โ for many players โ a seismic life event.
โWhen we went on a pre-season tour to Malaysia, we actually had to get passports sorted for a lot of the players,โ he says.
It was very new territory for the football club and a lot of individuals. For some of them, it was their first time on a plane and their first time eating food in a hotel in a different country, which even brings its own challenges.โ
โThis season, theyโre going to be asked to play more games than ever. Itโs the three-games-in-a-week conundrum. And a lot of the diet here is rice and fried food. Youโre trying to deal with the volume of games when thereโs not many vegetables in the diet, you donโt have a nutritionist and you donโt have a $100 million training ground. So, thatโs going to be a significant challenge for us this year.โ
With another fortnight until the league season gets underway, Nestor has some time to get is head around the hectic schedule and how best to navigate it. Thereโs plenty to think on: substantial changes to the squad as well as being down an assistant coach, though thatโs only half the story.
โWe had some wins and losses in the off-season,โ he says.
โWe lost Charlie Machell, a Geordie lad, who came here for pennies from Denmark. He took a gamble on me, to be honest, and on going down the pathway of playing football in Asia. He was a really important figure in the dressing room and though we tried to keep him, he had offers coming in that he really couldnโt turn down. Heโs signed for Hougang in Singapore now and heโs got a great contract and hopefully on the way to a great career out here.โ
โThe other big change was with my assistant. For the last few months of last season, I had a coach from Belfast โ Colum Curtis โ working with me. He had good experience in China and a good background in the club environment in Northern Ireland. But heโs getting married next year and told me that financially he probably needed to leave. I said he should chat to the Cambodian club with the big money here โ Visakha โ and he did. Theyโd hired all foreign staff and rumours were that a coach was coming in for the new campaign. But one thing led to another and it turned out Colum was actually appointed instead. So, now my former assistant will be facing me on the touchline this season. A fella from Belfast โ at the club with the most money and a massive amount of ambition โ against a fella from Limerick whoโs in charge of the current champions.โ
Itโs a different kind of pressure this time. But Nestor, having made some exciting additions to the team, is revelling in it.
โ2019 was a season of firsts, in many positive ways,โ he says.
โBut this one is shaping up that way too. And the most important thing is how we deal with it.โ

Interesting move by cowboys, certainly part tactical move by Jerry Jones to gain leverage against Prescott, if talk of him holding out joining up with team until last minute before start of season to get contract sorted are true, while he would have gotten away with that and walked straight into starting spot with last yearโs backup I could see him struggle if Dalton has a full training camp and pre season.
Surprised the Patriots didnโt pick him up, especially at that price. Shrewd move by the Cowboys though, gain some leverage on Prescott.
Heโll be better than Prescott at the Cowboys given the chance, and he wont have to wear that god awful Bengals uniform anymore
@Ollie Ryan: the uniform.that looks 100 times better than the brownes uniform ?
Nah but seriously he is a fantastic back up and I agree I think he could be/have been better than Prescott
@Ollie Ryan: itโs nice to have another browns fan about. Ya I think Dalton is decent and Bengals offence and defence never helped. Great signing.
@Caoimhรญn OโCheallachรกin: I thought I was the only one
@Colm Connolly: unlike The Browns, The Bengals have all the ingredients there to make a classy uniform, but itโs an eye sore
@Colm Connolly: You do know where the Bengals got their colours from?
@Ollie Ryan: haha ya , I have to day thou for years I preferred the Bengals jerseys but that white jersey the browns have now looks pretty sharp or at least as sharp as a browns jersey can
@Ollie Ryan: im on an island here but i think the Bengals and browns have the best helmets and unis in the league
@Ollie Ryan: no Iโm just hoping baker can turn into the QB I think he can be. I like his story. See if he can overcome this adversity next!
