'I felt like I was playing a video game' - Conor McGregor recalls 'surreal' UFC debut

The mixed martial artist also claimed he was “bringing in a new era of Irish sport”.

IRISH MMA FIGHTER Conor McGregor has spoken of his delight after a sensational debut victory in the UFC on Saturday.

Speaking to 2FM’s Game On programme, McGregor explained that the achievement hadn’t sunk in yet, saying that while walking out to the fight, he felt as if he was “playing a video game, the ‘UFC Undisputed’ video game.”

He described listening back to commentary of his fight as “so surreal,” and added: “I still feel like I’m in a bubble. I can’t put into words how much it means to me.”

McGregor described how he was “confident” and “calm” going into the fight, and insisted he wasn’t prepared to rest on his laurels in its aftermath.

“I’m not going in [to the UFC] just looking to take part. I’m going in looking to dominate. I’m bringing in a new era of Irish sport.”

He continued: “I’m going to get straight back into training and focus on the next challenge.

“I don’t really do anything else… Going to the gym is all I do 24/7.”

He also paid tribute to coach John Kavanagh, saying he “stood by me when many did not,” and added:

“I’m forever grateful to John and when I cash this cheque, I’m going to look after John.

“I always said that [our] gym is going to have three floors on it.”

He explained how much the victory would mean for “all the up and coming mixed marial artists,” and said the Irish were going to “flood the UFC” in the near future.
