AS MUCH AS the focus was supposed to be on Micheal Conlan owing to his first professional bout at Madison Square Garden, Conor McGregor quickly became the centre of attention after he escorted the Belfast boxer into the ring.
With a potential bout against Floyd Mayweather on the cards, the MMA star was intent on some self-promotion.
“Watch me take over boxing – trust me on that”, he told boxing reporters ringside.
“No one in this boxing game knows what’s coming. When I step in I’m going to shock the whole God damn world. Look me in the eyes – 28 years of age, confident as a motherfucker”.
“You’re all gonna eat your words – the whole world is gonna eat their words”, he continued.
When quizzed about when the bout will actually take place, McGregor was coy.
“It’s getting close – you’ll hear about it – I am boxing.”
The potential clash has been talked about for quite a while without any confirmation of date or venue but MMA chief Dana White has said it’s now inevitable that the pair will go head-to-head – it’s just a matter of when.
Why have you removed the red thumbs?! The whole allure of The 42 was the red thumbs v green thumbs. Yet another institution bowing down to political correctness given the new ‘guidelines’ of posting comments. Ps Hope Mayweather whoops McGregor!
@Ryan: McGregor has no chance of beating Mayweather and he knows that too. This is all about promotion. McGregor’s job between now and the fight is to convince as many people as possible that he has a shot. The reality is he has none
Says a lot about you to hope a jailed, woman beating man with no morals beats a loud taking but otherwise decent fellow Irish man who’ll be a massive underdog.
I agree bring back the red thumbs. Let us decide like emperors if the comment should live or die.
@Chief Pigum: Red thumbs is a great way to judge our perception of events and not just the authors. In saying that some of the soccer articles have gotten cringy with the usual red thumbs fetishists.
@Chief Pigum: isn’t the amount of thumbs up also an indicator that shows if a comment lives or dies?
I’m red thumbing my own comments at this stage.
Often enjoyed the green v red thumbs banter/debate. Won’t be dropping in as often as b4 now as I’m sure likewise for many more. Won’t say McGregor has no chance but surely Mayweather can’t lose it
@Ado Smith: couldn’t agree more. Bring back the red thumbs
I’m so over that mouthpiece McGregor.
How long did you date
Don’t get me wrong because i support all Irish athletes but i have a feeling this time Mcgregor is setting himself up to be humiliated. I’ve no douth he will be beaten but i just hope he isn’t embarrassed. Still you can’t knock him for living the American dream. A unemployed plumber goes to America and in his first professional fight he takes on arguably one of the greatest fighters on the planet. Sounds like a movie ive seen before.
@Darren Mccarthy: I’ll support the Irish always but I also know what Mayweather can do. The cost of humiliation and embarrassment is well worth it for Conor with the money he will make.
Let’s not pretend this is anything more than a money making exercise for all parties involved.
@Darren Mccarthy: he won’t be embarrassed
I haven’t updated the 42 yet. Ill red thumb my life away!!!
Removing the red thumbs was a good move
