CONOR COUNIHAN HAS accepted a further two-year term by the Cork county board to stay on as senior football manager.
Cork GAA chiefs announced at a county board meeting last week that they were set to offer Counihan another stint in charge and they have now confirmed that the Aghada man has decided to remain in the role.
However as was speculated previously, Counihan will have to make changes to his back room team with selectors Ger O’Sullivan (Dromtarriffe), Jim Nolan (Castlehaven) and Terry O’Neill (Bantry Blues) all opting out. The trio have cited work commitments and the length of time they have already been involved with Rebel senior squads.
O’Sullivan and Nolan previously served under former Rebels boss Billy Morgan while O’Neill was involved during Larry Tompkins reign in charge. Peadar Healy (Naomh Aban) will remain part of the back room team and Counihan will fill the remaining positions over the coming weeks.
The re-appointment of Counihan comes into place immediately as the county board were empowered last week to appoint him before next Tuesday’s county board meeting.
“We are delighted that Conor has decided to accept the offer of a further term and we would like to thank Ger O’Sullivan, Terry O’Neill and Jim Nolan for their huge contribution to Cork GAA,” said county board chairman Bob Ryan.
Along with the 2010 All-Ireland triumph, Counihan has claimed three Munster titles with the Cork senior side in 2008, 2009 and 2012, three Division 1 league crowns in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and a Division 2 league title in 2009.
