IRISH BOXER MICHAEL Conlan enjoyed an excellent Olympics debut in the Men’s Flyweight in boxing this evening, while Adam Nolan’s Olympic journey came to an end.
Cheered on by a largely partisan crowd, the Belfast native delivered a bravura performance to beat Ghana’s Duke Akeuth Micah in all three rounds, winning 5-2, 7-3, 7-3.
The 20-year-old now advances to the quarter-finals next week to face Nordine Oubaali of France.
Meanwhile, Adam Nolan was beaten 18-9 (3-2/6-4/9-3) by Andrey Zamkovoy of Russia.
Despite producing a respectable performance, Nolan will have few complaints, having been outclassed by his opponent.
Ireland now have four boxers remaining in the Olympics, with three within a victory of securing a medal.
Well done michael, you boxed well, keep it going
Extremely impressed by young Michael. Me thinks a New star is born.
Well Done Michael
The only way Ireland will win a medal will be in boxing. We are weak at other sports. Swimming and Athletics are atrocious
What about the sailing graine Murphy was in for a shou in the swimmingt only she is sick
Thanks for being truthful and not being sugary.
Class act , with great attitude towards his sport and for his Country .
Well done Michael and Adam. You did yourselves and Ireland proud!!
When is Michael boxing next
Id say Tuesday
Think your comment was meant for the gogshite jumping on the kitchen press am I right
It’s about time Ireland invests in boxing and other Olympic sports instead of all the money funnelled into GAA cronies !
yea you’ve got it, was using my mobile to comment and must have skipped to the next story, I’ve already asked the powers that be in the journal to delete it before I embarrass myself any further but they’re gone for the night or having a bit of a laugh at my comment. There definitely regulation shorts the boxer is wearing not underwear, sorry for the mix up.
