ANOTHER SUPERB PERFORMANCE by Michael Conlan secured Ireland’s first gold medal today at EUBC European Elite Championships in Samokov, Bulgaria.

Conlan looked excellent as he defeated Qais Ashfaq of Great Britain on scores of 30-27, 29-28, 30-27 in the bantamweight final.

The bout was a repeat of last year’s Commonwealth Games final, from which Belfast native Conlan also emerged victorious.

It was an equally impressive display from Joe Ward in the light-heavyweight final.

The 21-year-old always looked comfortable as he defeated Peter Mullenberg of the Netherlands (29-28, 30-27, 30-27).

It was Ward’s second European gold medal. In 2011, the Westmeath southpaw defeated Russia’s Nikita Ivanov in the final at the age of just 17.
