ANOTHER CLARE ALL-IRELAND winner has called time on his inter-county hurling career, as Colin Ryan announced his retirement this morning.
Ryan was pivotal on that day in 2013, hitting seven points in Croke Park as the Banner lifted the Liam McCarthy Cup following a 5-16 to 3-16 win over Cork.
The Newmarket-on-Fergus forward will be remembered for his accuracy and precision from dead ball — he fired 11 frees in the drawn final — but also his contribution from play. He was the Championship’s top scorer in 2013, clocking 70 points.
Ryan confirmed his departure on his Twitter account earlier:

“After a year out and a new addition, it’s time to call it a day, been an honour to wear the jersey, maybe this little man is the future,” he tweeted.

Having made his senior debut with Clare in 2007, the 29-year-old had been a mainstay until this season. He featured in 2016 when they were crowned league champions, and also has an All-Ireland U21 medal under his belt.
He recently turned his focus to soccer, and confirmed in January 2017 that he would miss this year’s action as he was taking an extended break from inter-county hurling.
The news comes after defender Brendan Bugler brought his 11-year senior career with the Banner to a close earlier this week.
