Coining the offside rule: new 50p pieces introduced for London 2012

The Royal Mint has launched a series of commemorative coins for this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.

EVER ATTEMPTED TO explain the offside rule to someone using salt and pepper shakers and a bowl of sugar as the goal?

Well The Royal Mint in Britain has come up with a novel way of solving that problem.

To commemorate this year’s London Olympic and Paralympic Games, they have produced 29 different types of limited edition 50p coins which celebrate sports from aquatics right through to wrestling.

They began a public competition three years ago and had nearly 30,000 entrants, which were whittled down to the final designs.

Sports journalist Neil Wolfson was successful with his simple diagram of football’s most frequently-debated law and he feels it encapsulates the beautiful game.

“I’m a football fan myself,” said Wolfson on The Royal Mint’s website.

“I’ve followed the Premier League since its inception and if I had 50p for every time someone asked what the offside rule was then I’d be a rich man.

“When it goes into circulation I hope that people use it to explain the rule and that it provokes discussion.”

The coins cost €4.60 to buy online and are well worth purchasing to get you out of those sticky moments in the future.
