Clare claim All-Ireland 1/4 final berth with commanding display against Roscommon

After a free-flowing opening, both sides were handed red cards in a fiery second half.

Clare 2-12

Roscommon 1-9

Daragh Small reports from Pearse Stadium

EOIN CLEARY KICKED six points as Clare continued their fantastic run in the qualifiers and knocked Roscommon out of championship with this Round 4A victory at Pearse Stadium.

Clare lost to Kerry in Munster earlier this year, and they were underdogs for their second round qualifier against Laois, but they came back to win that game and they registered a seven-point win away to Sligo last weekend.

Meanwhile, Roscommon suffered the biggest defeat in a Connacht final replay against Galway, and although they reached a Division 1 league semi-final this year they once again failed to deliver in the championship.

Cathal O’Connor got sent-off for Clare, but Sean Mullooly and David Murray were sent-off for Roscommon. Enda Smith got the consolation goal for Roscommon but it was the efforts from David Tubridy and Jamie Malone that were the difference.

Clare held a deserved 2-6 to 0-7 lead at half-time, after they played a fantastic brand of football in the first-half and terrorised the Roscommon rearguard who could handle the runs of Gary Brennan from midfield, and the movement of Tubridy and Keelan Sexton inside.

Ciarain Murtagh and Enda Smith kicked the first two points for Roscommon, but Brennan got Clare’s first point in the fifth minute and Tubridy scored a goal with a simple finish in the sixth minute.

Murtagh kicked two frees but the cracks began to appear in the Roscommon defence, Dean Ryan and Tubridy scored and despite the efforts from Donie Shine and Sean Mullooly it was all Clare.

A wonderful run from Brennan yielded an Cleary point in the 22 nd minute, and then Malone struck’s Roscommon’s second goal after a move involving Sean Collins, Sexton and Cleary.

Tubridy and Cleary scored again before Niall Kilroy kicked an important free for Roscommon. Clare were five points up at half-time and Cleary extended their lead.

But that was after O’Connor got his red. Kevin Higgins got a black card for Roscommon and then Mullooly was sent-off for a second yellow in the 49th minute.

Smith was fisted a goal in the 54 th minute, and despite Diarmuid Murtagh’s free,Cleary and Shane McGrath gave Clare a cushion, before Cleary slotted a ’45, then his sixth point and Sean Malone sealed it.
