Irish striker Cillian Sheridan clinches league win for APOEL Nicosia

The Cavan footballer scored the only goal in a narrow win.

WHILE IRELAND’S FORWARDS failed to break down the Italian defence at Craven Cottage last night, Cillian Sheridan was celebrating a league win in Cyprus.

The striker scored the only goal in APOEL Nicosia’s 1-0 win over close rivals AEL Limassol. The game was played in a neutral venue, behind close doors, but was no less frantic and fraught than one would expect from a league decider. The win meant both sides finished level on points but APOEL had a better head-to-head record so won their 23rd league title.

Sheridan converted a rebound chance in the first half to set APOEL on their way. He also scored in his side’s cup win last weekend. The former Celtic and Kilmarnock player has three senior caps for Ireland, having made his international debut in 2010.
